Will I fit in ? Do I really have the time to devote to school ?
To start with there were more ‘ mature students ’ that I anticipated . Truthfully , it did take a couple of weeks for the students to feel comfortable with me in the class .
If you are an adult with children and workingtime is a real concern . One of the ways that helped was being able to enrol in an online program or class .
After a few weeks the students started to notice that my life experience provided me with experience and knowledge that was an asset to group projects , and I always completed my assignments . Soon , I was a sought-after addition to many group projects .
Can I afford to do this ?
This worked especially well with the 1st year classes that were a review of past studies or slow introduction to new areas of study . It helped with cutting costs , I did not need to get a babysitter .
Also , because I worked it meant that I did not have to heave the house another day and / or for evening classes . Instead I could study in my PJ ’ s while running a load of laundry .
How long will it take to get a degree ?
Have you ever noticed that when it is something you really want , and you think it will make you feel good - you find the money !
Making a 4 or even 8-year commitment , depending on your field of choice , to gaining a degree can be dauting for anyone , especially if you have a family or work . I was surprised to learn that I was eligible for credits based on life and job experience .
Education is an expense - what changed things was when I changed my thinking from “ I cannot afford this ” to “ this is an investment in me .”
That was when I became creative in finding the funding for further education .
