Seeing The Art
The Story of Stephanie Bond
S o often we stand in front of a
painting deciding if we like what we see and
wondering what the artist was trying to capture
and convey.
We often assume that the artist is one that
lives only for art and falls into the category of
‘struggling artist’ living in a loft scraping out
a meager existence. Or the artist who has ‘paid
their dues’ and moves in circles where their
art is recognized, and they have sponsors or
patrons that support them.
Sometimes there is more than the brush strokes
on canvas in the desire to create beautiful
pieces of art. Sometimes there is a passion
that drives the artist to want to brush beauty
into all areas of their life and the lives of the
community in which they live;
Seeing the “Art” in the
everyday moments of life
I recently attended a small art show, in the
home of Stephanie Bond.
Stephanie lives in a rural area of Quebec close
to the infamous community of Percé and one
of the most photographed Quebec and Canada
landmarks, Percé Rock.
14
Stephanie, when did you first start painting?
I was born and raised in the area (Barachois,
Gaspe, Quebec) and I first started painting when
I was around 16.
Have you taken classes or lessons?
No, I started with pencil drawings and gradually
moved into painting.
It was my paintings that gained me a place
when I was 19 (in 1999) in the Dawson College
Graphic Design Program. There were hundreds
of applicants and only 34 seats. I was accepted
based on my artwork.
Graphic Design is a different career choice
than an artist, what made you move into
Graphic Design?
Painting is a difficult career, often considered
a hobby more that a real job.
