Johnston’ s Telling“ STORIES Worth Telling”

Susan Johnston’ s career in media began when she was a preteen( only eleven years old) she appeared in the original film, Great Gatsby that starred the late Robert Redford. Since that time Johnston continued to work the ends and outs of traditional media( television, film, and stage). Name it she did it from acting, singing, casting, producing and is on the cutting edge of what is now termed new media. In our Oovoo( video conferencing) interview with Johnston, I asked her to define New Media and she summed it up very simply as the medium that one’ s chooses to produce media. New Media Film Festival has 18 different categories of media produced on new technology, iPhone, iPad and the Smartphone. In our eyes she’ s an authority. Johnston prides herself on platforming, showcasing and honoring‘ stories worth telling’ but will not sugar coat for any production that does not meet the standards of her 4 year old film festival.

Johnston( click link for full bio) has an extensive background in traditional film and the televisions industries. It a proverbial who’ s whose read and very impressive. Her mother died when she was very young and she credits her upbringing by father and brother with her abilities to navigate these typical all old boys networks.
She says her dad give her life lessons in his daily parenting that aids her in figuring things out for herself. Interestingly enough her father’ s parenting skills positioned her to not only figure things out but aids her in thinking out of the box as well as a strategic planner. I learned in the interview that her father parenting skills also influenced her emotionally. Johnston is a beauty, she a loving spirit but she understands completely how to take emotions out of the equation when it comes to professionalism and she is adept at sizing up the business end of a project. When it comes down to seeing the bigger picture clearly it is necessary to be level headed and leave the emotions out of the picture.
It is hard to classify Johnston because of extensive experiences in entertainment. She has acted in television, film, and stage, done voiceovers, she a gifted musical performer, she has produced as well as hosted. Well the list goes on but why don’ t you simply visit Susan Johnston. com and see for yourself what I mean. The other thing that I want you to know is she is one most humblest people you could ever hope to meet. In terms of giving whether of her time, talent or advice all of which are very valuable, I dare say Johnston is undervalued. As I interviewed her she shared so much, but one story in particular lead me to ask her if person reference knew who she was. Johnston has a keen business acumen. Her advice to this particular person was not received and that person later recognized the opportunity only it was well— too late.
In terms of pulling it all together Johnston knows how to get IT done and she also knows how to put together optimized teams. She values those who work for her and I found out during our interview her people value her. It is easy to understand why. I believe her greatest contribution to the multimedia industry is her generous spirit. There is no doubt she is firmly grounded her the passions of her spirit and is living her truth and helping others be accountable to the truth. Speaking of spirit and truth we talked about women’ s ability to change the world we live in and make changes in education, socio-economics and more fronts like healthcare for example. Media has played such a pivotal role in how women see themselves and how men see us. New Media Film Festival and Johnston is helping Women of Concern Professionals Strategic Consciousness Networking bring new media to Richmond CA, in community where the youth are disadvantage and at risk to help them tell their stories.
