Susan offers these insights to anyone considering a career or pursuing advancement in reinsurance .
On the industry The reinsurance industry is stable , but it is also constantly changing . This is what makes it an attractive career choice for students , as well as professionals coming into the industry from other fields . At the same time , the reinsurance industry needs people with diverse backgrounds and interests to help it continue to advance and grow .
On networking Most people are willing to meet with you if you ask and are willing to come prepared . When reaching out to someone new , especially someone in a senior leadership position , make sure you know what you want from the conversation . I have been fortunate to establish connections with several people at the top of the industry , but these connections never would have happened if I hadn ’ t taken the initiative to ask and put in the time to prepare .
On board service There is a substantial need for experienced professionals , especially in the nonprofit sector . But most organizations do not actively seek out new board members – even when they need help . If you are interested in a position , you will most likely have to conduct your search proactively . Let friends and colleagues know you are interested . I currently serve on the board of Tri County CMO [ a community resource for families struggling with complex childhood behavioral and emotional issues ], and I found the opportunity simply by letting a female friend know that I was interested in gaining more leadership experience .
On work-life balance In today ’ s world – and in the reinsurance industry in particular – the opportunities are there . Once again , you just need to speak up . In most positions , and with the technological resources that many companies in the industry have available , there is simply no reason for someone like me who lives in central New Jersey to spend countless hours commuting every day into New York City . I have been incredibly fortunate at TransRe to have a boss who recognizes that professionals get the job done regardless of location . Just know that office visibility still matters and work with your management to craft a solution that works for all parties . A traditional office environment can be energizing ( especially in NYC ) so be sure to find the right balance for you .
