Women helping Mothers ( Mujeres Aydando Madres (MAM ) is a nonprofit
organization from Puerto Rico with the goal of helping women during their
maternity and promoting a constructive culture based on the physical and
psychological health of the families.
Founded in 2007, MAM was born from the Sisterhood of Midwives from
Puerto Rico ( Hermandad de Parteras de Puerto Rico (HPPR) and represents
the Latin American and Caribbean network for the Humanization of
childbirth and birth in Puerto Rico.
MAM sees that by creating awareness women will make decisions that
support their emotional, mental and physical well-being throughout their
lives. this in turn can help prevent problems such as abuse, depression
and illness.
MAM responds to the needs of our community in Puerto Rico to lower the
rate of unnecessary cesareans, increase breastfeeding, lower the amount
of domestic violence cases and decrease their dependence on government
assistance and to help single mothers who have with little resources.
MAM is an organization based primarily in promoting the rights of pregnant
women. MAM wants every women to be equipped with the necessary
knowledge so that their pregnancy and postpartum experience be a
healthy one full of positive memories.
MAM ‘s primary purpose is to educate the Puerto Rican society so that the
potential of pregnancy as an event that can change positively a women’s
life cam be seem. It also promotes the humanitarian care of women during
maternity.
