Daily Activities:
- They went shopping, attended festivals, sacrifices, games, and entertainment.
- Women would ac as hostesses and dined out. They attended women-only social events.
- Aristocratic women spent a great deal of time on personal grooming and beauty preparations.
- They would gather in the streets to meet with friends
- Attend religious rites at temples
- Visit the baths
- Entertainment: attend debates at the Forum, the public games, chariot races, theatrical performances, dinner parties
- Wealthy women might tour the empire: they’d participate or view religious ceremonies and sites. They would also sometimes travel to the countryside during the summer when it was very hot in Rome.
- Clothing production: one of the most important tasks to oversee in a large household
- Spinning wool was often a symbol of a wife’s duties. Even women of upper classes were expected to be able to spin and weave wool
Food they’d eat:
- Romans would eat a light breakfast and little food during the day, but large dinner. Dinner was a major event, started at around 3 in the afternoon. They would lie on their sides on a couch and get served by servants. Romans would eat with their hands and rinse their hands often with water throughout the course of the meal
- The main dishes in their diet were: bread, beans, fish, vegetables, cheese, and dried fruit. For their meat, they would primarily eat seafood, but would also eat some poultry and red meat. Their diets were actually quite healthy. The rich would have a variety of foods in fancy sauces.
Meals:
- Breakfast: cheese, bread, fruit, milk or wine
- Lunch wasn’t served, they would just have small portions of leftovers as snacks between breakfast and dinner (the snacks contained meal dishes, fish, fruit, cheese and wine)
- Dinner: Appetizer, main course, offering to the gods, dessert, after dinner drinking and entertainment
- The main spices that they use are salt, wine, and pepper
- The romans did not know what sugar was. They primarily used honey to sweeten their food.
