La Louis Vuitton Cup è, fin dalla sua nascita nel 1983, una delle più famose e
prestigiose competizioni velistiche. Sicuramente, forte di un nome così importante nella moda, è l’appuntamento più elegante nel mondo della vela. Una
sfida che, al termine delle regate di selezione tra gli sfidanti (challengers),
designa l’equipaggio che contende la America’s Cup al detentore. Le regate di
selezione che vedevano la partecipazione di un sempre crescente numero di
sfidanti, si svolgevano anche precedentemente, a partire dal 1970, ma solo
dall’edizione del 1983 è stato posto in palio il prestigioso trofeo, oltre al
diritto di sfidare il defender dell’America’s Cup.
All’inizio e fino al 2003 la Louis Vuitton Cup ricalcava lo schema
già usato per le precedenti regate di selezione. Aveva luogo nelle

been put up for grabs the trophy, as well as the right
to challenge the defender of the America’s Cup.
