Robert Mapplethorpe è tra i più importanti artisti di arti visive della fine
del ventesimo secolo. Questa grande retrospettiva ripercorre la sua carriera
come fotografo dalle umili origini nei primi anni '70 alle guerre culturali
degli anni '90.
Grazie all'esposizione di ritratti, nudi, nature morte e del controverso X
Portfolio, la mostra esplora la creazione della tecnica di Mapplethorpe che
gli ha permesso di trasmettere la sua eredità nel XXI secolo.
Provenienti dalla Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation, anche due esposizioni complementari, una al J. Paul Getty Museum e l'altra presso il Los
Angeles County Museum of Art, che mettono in luce i diversi aspetti della
Robert Mapplethorpe is among the most influential visual artists of
the late twentieth century. This major retrospective exhibition reexamines the arc of his photographic work from its humble beginnings
in the early 70s to the culture wars of the 90s.
Featuring portraits, nudes, still lifes, and the controversial X Portfolio, the exhibition explores Mapplethorpe’s studio practice and the
creation of his foundation, which has shepherded his legacy into the
21st century.
