Brewood CE Middle School –
‘Outstanding’ Personal Development
Brewood CE Middle’s
Executive Headteacher,
David Swift
In the recent OFSTED Inspection in April
this year Brewood CE Middle School
was graded as ‘Good’ overall with pupils’
personal development and welfare being
graded as ‘Outstanding’ – the highest
possible grading.
Executive Headteacher David Swift said
‘We are thrilled and delighted with our
latest Ofsted report and are really
pleased that the comments of the
Inspector recognise the hard work and
progress we have made, particularly over
the last 16 months. I would like to thank
all the pupils, parents, staff and
governors for their continued support
and dedication to this wonderful school’.
Inspectors noted that ‘Teaching is
consistently good’; and that pupils ‘make
strong progress from the beginning of
Year 5 to the end of Year 8.’ They also
stated that ‘leaders at all levels are
ambitious and highly aspirational for all
pupils.’
The report notes that ‘the Headteacher
provides strong leadership and that staff
value the support and guidance they
receive from him’ and that since the last
Inspection, he has led and driven
significant improvements across school.
The Inspectors were particularly
impressed with the school’s strong
safeguarding culture stating that
‘Safeguarding procedures at Brewood
are of the highest quality and are the first
priority of every member of staff’. It also
states that ‘pupils say they feel very safe
in school and learn how to keep
themselves safe outside school in
different situations’.
It also acknowledges the work of
governors who it said ‘have a detailed
understanding of school performance
and hold leaders to account for it’.
Brewood has 420 pupils and is a popular
school choice for parents locally and
further afield.
Parents tell the school that the aspects
which they like most about the school
are its Christian ethos, the ‘Be the Best
you can Be! Merit awards scheme, the
extra-curricular activities and residentials
and the free after-school homework club.
In 2013 the school was awarded the
International School’s status for its links
with partner European schools and
pupils have visited France, Germany and
Italy as part of a special project funded
by the British Council. This February,
Year 7 and 8 pupils visited Auschwitz in
Poland as part of the school’s Holocaust
studies.
Pupils can choose from a wide range of
instrumental lessons led by experienced
peripatetic teachers who work in the
school’s ‘Major Minor’ Music School.
There is a thriving choir which performs
in school and at out of school events.
Brewood has a very strong PE
department and staff provide pupils with
opportunities to take part in competitive
internal and external sports events
including football, netball, cross country
and swimming. The school was awarded
the Gold Schools’ Games Mark in 2017.
Headteacher David Swift said “we have
good links with our feeder First Schools
in Brewood, Wheaton Aston, Coven and
Bishopswood and are part of the
Wolgarston Collaboration of schools. We
are also really excited about joining the
St Chad’s Academies Trust next term to
extend our links with schools from other
local authorities and share best practice
with colleagues.”
