‘Grimes’ is the one-woman
master behind the hypnotic
sounds and vocals of singles
such as Genesis, Oblivion,
Crystal Ball, and Vanessa.
Meet Claire Boucher.
25-year old, Canadian-born,
Claire Boucher is a producerslash-artist-slash-singer-slashsongwriter-slash-musician.
This
clearly
multi-talented
human
being
was
first
introduced
to
the
‘underground-music’
scene
when she attended McGill
University
in Montréal,
in
which
time
she
began
experimenting with different
sounds.
This
experimental
music
seemed to be Boucher’s calling,
as later, in 2010, she released
her debut album, Geidi Primes,
which was soon followed by
her second album, Halfaxa
later that year. Both albums
were released under her stagename, Grimes. Her latest
album, released in 2012,
Visions, was received well by
critics. Grimes seems to have
established her own genre of
music, which is influenced by
electronic, pop, R&B, hip hop,
rock, and medieval music,
resulting in a bewitching tone.
Boucher, however, describes
her work as “ADD music.”
Grimes
primarily
utilizes
keyboards, synthesizers and
vocals to construct a piece,
with the occasional drum and
guitar accompaniment.
Claire Boucher wrote Visions
over nine days of solitude, and
says, "I started to feel like I was
I was
convinced my music
was a gift from God. It
channelling
spirits.
was like I knew exactly what to
do next, as if my songs were
already written."
Not only is Claire Boucher
musical,
but
is
also
exceptionally talented at art,
which can be seen on all three
of her albums. Her artwork
could arguably be viewed as a
visual version of her music, as
it too is unique and possesses
the same dream-like and
slightly melancholy quality.
It goes without saying that
Claire Boucher is a beautiful
and talented individual, who
strongly
represents
the
minority of females in her line
of work. We can
