Fitness What exercise regimen are you following to achieve your goals? I wake up at 7am, do 60 meter sprints uphill and then work on movement drills on the court. Sometimes I work out by myself but sometimes I like to work on the movement stuff with other players. u What role have your parents played in your squash career? They’ve played a huge role. In fact, I don’t think I would ever have played if not for them. My brother Chris and I were born right into White Oaks. I’ve been holding a racquet forever and I played my first tournament when I was six. In those days, I was playing nine year olds and I used to get killed! I’d go hide and cry where my parents couldn’t find me. But that didn’t last long – I’ve always been competitive in every sport. I started beating my mum when I was about nine! (Nick laughs an evil little son-laugh, I’m sure picturing his mother’s face as she reads this!) What role has White Oaks played in the development of your game? White Oaks has always been my second home. I’m there at least three hours a day, whenever I’m in town. There are a bunch of members, guys my dad played with like Scott McLachlan, Chad Dommasch – all those guys used to hit with my brother and me when we were younger. It didn’t matter that we were kids – they were always serious…and then, eventually we beat them! What does going pro mean? I still have one more semester left at Cornell but after I’m finished, I’ll be moving to Toronto and starting my professional squash career. There are a lot of tournaments in the States and Canada but I’ll start by playing in the smaller ones to build up my ranking. Once I win a few and get a higher spot in the rankings, I can get into the tournaments with bigger prize money. I’ll be working on my squash career full-time for four or five years and we’ll see how it goes. If it’s not going anywhere, I’ll always have my degree and my squash background to fall back on. NOTHING FEELS BETTER THAN PLAYING FOR YOUR COUNTRY MEMBERS What about the Pan Am Games or the World Championships? If I made the Canadian team for the World Championships, that would be huge but you can’t just jump on the team. I’d have to prove myself and if I made it, that would be a great honor. I’ve played two tournaments on the Junior Canadian team and that was a huge accomplishment. There’s nothing that feels better than playing for your country. They have trials for the team every summer and the top ten players in Canada get called up to try out. Four make it…with sometimes a fifth guy as a backup. I’d be thrilled just to have the chance to try out!
