FAMILY PET continued...  Perhaps most importantly, talk about  your pet, often and with love. Let your child know that while the pain will go away, they will always have happy memories of the pet.  Shedding a few tears together is healthy and therapeutic. Ask your children how they feel and help them talk about lov- ing memories and funny stories.  Saying Goodbye The family pet is gone. Now what? Honoring and lovingly remembering can help. Here are just a few ideas:  Host a small Celebration of Life me- morial service.  If your pet was cremated, put ashes in a pet cemetery or somewhere special in your yard with some type of head- stone (tree, flowers, stone, etc.).  Invite family and close friends to a “Bon Voyage” dinner party as a chance to say goodbye and share happy memories (a great steak or fish dinner perhaps).  Create a memorial website or social media page.  Make a scrapbook or shadow box with happy memorabilia such as with a col- lar, tags, and photos.  Draw pictures that can be framed and hung somewhere special in your home.  Make a bracelet or necklace spelling a pet’s name (a good craft for younger children).  Have a memorial PawPrint in concrete made with your pet’s name to put in your yard or garden.  Donate money to a local animal orga- nization in honor of your deceased pet.  Reading age-appropriate books about pet death. Examples: “Goodbye, Brecken,” by David Lupton, for chil- dren ages 4 to 8; “Kate, the Ghost Dog: Coping With the Death of a Pet,” by Wayne L. Wilson, for ages 8 to 13; and “Memories of You,” by Erainna Winnett, for ages 7 to 12. While it’s impossible to shelter children from a pet’s death, you can help them handle the loss and remember all the love the pet brought to the family. The Niagara Frontier Veterinary Society is comprised of more than 75 small animal hospitals and nearly 200 practitioners in Erie and Niagara Counties. It exists to ad- vance public awareness and understanding of proper pet health care, veterinary services and the veterinary profession.
