M
ake up your mind Mother
Nature!! One minute we
are dealing with your
winter snow and the next
we are wearing our spring
jackets! We don’t know if
we should head to the ski
slope or start spring clean-
ing the garage. We don’t
have Cabin Fever — we
have Cabin Crazy! Even
if we can get outside, the
weather is so changeable,
no wonder we are all sick!
It might be best to just
stop fighting it and stay in-
doors, enjoy some super books to enter-
tain and educate the most restless of us.
There might be no
better way to spend time
inside on a grey day than
building with LEGOs.
Perhaps the only thing bet-
ter is building with LEGOs
and using them to help tell
a story. Hospital Heist
(Scholastic, New York,
2019, $19.99) is another
story in the Lego City Ad-
venture that encourages the
reader to follow the directions to build
the characters and props for the story
they are about to read.
Once they are done the
fun begins as the LEGO
wheelchair, medical cart,
doctor, and crook can be
used to tell the story as it
is read. It is a wonderful
way to encourage young
children to learn retell the
stories and even create
stories of their own.
The Totally Sick Sick-Day Activity
Book (Charlesbridge, New York, 2019,
$7.99), written by Mark Shulman and il-
lustrated by Joe Bartos, is
just what the doctor ordered
for anyone that is home
sick. Activities, games,
puzzles, doodling ideas,
and many fun ways to learn
about geography, science,
art, stretch your mind, and
so much more! All it takes
is a pencil, a curious mind,
and a day or two off of
school. This book will be
sure to help make the time
fly and the sick better in no time!
It is astounding what
you can make out of paper!
Check out British artist Di-
ana Beltrán Herrera who
creates birds so detailed
they look like they will fly
away any minute. Do an
online search for Chinese
artist Li Hongbo, who cre-
ates paper sculptures that
can be moved like a slinky.
Maggy Woodley’s new
book, Easy Paper Projects
(Page Street Publishing, Salem, 2019,
$19.99) is perfect to get your young art-
ist off to a great start and
maybe even keep them
engaged and entertained
until spring finally ar-
rives. Sixty crafts to wear,
share, gift, and enjoy with
simple directions, col-
orful photographs, and
made of the kind of pa-
per that you have lying
around your house, will
