THE KIDDIE GOURMET
T
— by Barbara Blackburn
here is a tropical
island themed
restaurant in De-
pew, called The Cove. This
culinary corner boasts a Kids
Combo Meals menu, includ-
ing French fries and a small
soda, for $7.99. The choices
listed on the regular menu,
and not a separate enter-
tainment sheet, include Per-
sonal Pizza, Grilled Cheese,
Chicken Fingers, Mac ‘n
Cheese, Fish & Chips, and
Hamburger. Kids’ seating is
available.

Not that we’re pesca-
tarians we often order
what swims. Dad’s
special ($13.99) was
the Panko Breaded
Beer Battered Fish
Fry. That night there
were eleven variet-
ies of the Friday fish
special, including a
Casino-style featuring
a broiled version, sim-
ilar to Clams Casino. The fish fry was
the old-fashioned variety complete with
potato salad, macaroni salad, coleslaw,
and French fries. Look at Fish ‘n Chips
for the three cod fillets, mentioned under
Seafood Baskets. Because the Japanese
panko breadcrumbs are coarser than
most, they create a deliciously crunchy
crust. Also crunchy were the battered
fries.
My Seafood Fra Diavolo presented
sauteed shrimp, scallops, andouille sau-
sage, hot banana pepper, onions, and
mushrooms tossed in a spicy red sauce
and served on a bed of linguini ($22.99).
Diavolo, as Italian-speaking diners
know, means “devil.” Likewise, the dish
is spiced with chilies. Servings are huge
here, enough to fill a take-home contain-
er, if that’s your thing.
Soups that evening were Clam
Chowder ($3.99) and Seafood Bisque
($5.99). We dipped our spoons into a
bisque loaded with flavor
and not oversalted.
Lest seafood is not for
you, the For Land Lovers
section offers some steak
and chicken entrees such as
Kickin’ Chicken ($15.99).
The kickin’ part comes from
the sliced stuffed banana
peppers. Four pasta entrees
all focus on seafood. Total
vegetarians can search the
salad section, all fresh and
served with a hot breadstick
— a very yummy one, at
that. Vegans could hold the
cheese on the Chef Salad
($6.99).
For hot food lov-
ers, you can heat up
your meal with Starters
and Munchies, such as
Seafood Stuffed Ba-
nana Peppers ($13.99)
or some other tamer
but just as versatile se-
lection, such as Peel &
Eat Shrimp ($11.00).
Continuing in the seafood selec-
tion is the Steam Pots category, with
four choices, ranging from $25.99 for
the Clam Bake to the Cove’s Ultimate
Pot: King crab leg, 2 snow crab clusters,
split Maine lobster tail, half pound of
peel-and-eat shrimp & clams, 6 mussels,
baby red potatoes, corn on the cob and
andouille sausage ($52.99).
Desserts that night included choco-
late cake and peanut butter pie. We re-
lied on some other pleased patrons to
convince us that we were missing a good
ending.
The Cove serves well-prepared,
high quality food for gourmets and those
who just like to eat. The lettering on
the menu shows two palm trees grow-
ing from the letter “V,” for some reason
reminding me of Gilligan’s Island! It is
a proper place for seafood and special
events. However, just dining there can
be special.
