Hsu works alongside childhood buddies
Andrew Wong, Kristopher Hunt and Ryan
McClelland, who all grew up living within
a stone’s throw of each other. Wong
started former business Sonix with Hsu,
while Hunt worked in communications
and McClelland in commercial and
residential building maintenance, with
backgrounds in exercise science and
finance.
According to Hsu, the greatest benefit
of the site is that customers don’t have
to pay a premium (a sum of money in
addition to the regular price) when
purchasing their shoes from their site. “As
we all know Australians pay a premium
on everything when shopping locally.
Despite the success of the business
already, the Next Pair team have set
their sights on the future goals of the site.
“We want to create an app that provides
additional information and enhances
the shopper’s experience, so that they
are empowered to make better buying
decisions and also the right ones and
to enhance our site’s interactivity to
allow customer input and feedback, so
that we can rank and source the shoes
people want based on this feedback,”
Hsu says.
“We’re also hoping that we diversify
into a brand that sells an entire lifestyle
package, including socks, headphones
and shorts.”

Australians are having to pay the
highest prices in the world for common
purchases, including shoes, according to
Deutsche Bank’s latest global consumer
index. In response, Alex Hsu has
launched “The Next Pair”, an e-retailer
which addresses the market gap for

Aussie shoe lovers wanting to purchase
their kicks at globally comparable
prices.
The annual world consumer price index
maps the world’s prices relative to the US
dollar, and for the fourth year Australia
has topped the list with the highest
dollar. The report also compares the
relative price of a pair of Adidas Super
Star 2s, where the Australian price ranks
as more expensive than countries like
Brazil, Japan, Russia, the United States,
Canada, Malaysia and more.
It was after the launch of his first business
Sonix that Hsu conceived of the idea,
which would address this issue, which
was to take his background in IT and
bridge the two worlds he loved and
knew – technology and shoes. Hsu then
launched The Next Pair, an e-retailer.
“I had a lightbulb moment,” Hsu says,
“Start an online footwear business
that mirrors our IT business, in terms
of structure and its model. We could
leverage our existing contacts and
experience to build a business selling a
commodity that is highly sought after,
but most of all we have a passion for.”
