Five questions with...
Lee Smith
Partner Body BikeAustralia
BODY BIKE® International began its quest for ultimate indoor
cycle in Denmark in the mid-1990’s. Known for its distinctive
enclosed cycle design, today BODY BIKE® produces more
than 10,000 high-quality indoor bikes every year with sales
representatives in more than 30 countries worldwide. The
quest for perfection that got it all started never ends, which
is why BODY BIKE® is receptive and ready for change. Craig
Mac chats to Body Bike Partner Lee Smith.
Craig Mac: What fundamental
changes have you seen in the indoor
Group Cycling space over the last 5
years?
Lee Smith: There has been a shift in
the mindset of fitness facilities that
have a focus on indoor cycling. New
technology in the bikes, the way in
which indoor cycling is delivered
and the whole ‘experience’ are key
factors in the increased popularity
of classes. That said, owners have
a clearer understanding of the
importance of quality and cost
associated with delivering the right
bike for their facility.
CM: If I am a club owner looking for
a group cycle solution, why should I
consider BODY BIKE® as a worthwhile
investment?

LS: Since 2012, BODY BIKE has
continually developed new models
with technologies that add value to
the indoor cycling experience. The
BODY BIKE Training App for the new
SMART+ model captures and displays
readings, which include wattage,
cadence and heart rate. Our build
quality, unique design, precision
engineering and manufacturing
techniques are second to none.
BODY BIKE are indoor cycle specialists
– we don’t make treadmills or squat
racks or Kettlebells, we make bikes.
CM: With roots firmly in Denmark,
what ‘major’ differences do you see
between the Australian and the
European markets?
ADAPTABLE
Kettle Gryp® transfers quickly
from one weight to another
and has been designed to
fit most dumbbell handles.
LS: Europeans definitely participate in
more classes that use technology like
wattage as the measure of personal
intensity within the group and the use
of big TV’s or projector screens within
studios is more common. In Australia
we tend to offer programming more
immersed in music, with the workout
built into choreography that is varied,
ECONOMICAL
Kettlebells are expensive.
Kettle Gryp® isn’t.

dynamic and generally measured
by perceived exertion or guided
by heart rate. Europeans also wear
more cycling kit like shorts and shoes. was extremely happy. If you have
an idea: from a simple name or logo
right through to something special,
we can do it.
CM: A high agenda item for many
club owners and operators. How do
BODY BIKE® approach and deliver
on customisation? CM: What can we look forward to in
2019 and beyond from BODY BIKE®?
LS: We offer 10+ colours across our
entire range and that’s the first step
a facility can make to create visual
‘ownership’ of their new Body Bikes.
The next step is to have additional
specific branding added. With our
fully enclosed internals a standout
feature of the brand, the area on
both sides of the bike are basically a
billboard. We offer custom branding
to any model - the sky is the limit. We

LS: The biggest news is the release of
the new OceanIX cycle which has all
its plastic covers manufactured out
of recycled commercial fishing nets.
You can see the OceanIX at The
Fitness Show and Expo in Sydney in
April. We will also release a new
BODY BIKE SMART DOCK. A new
and improved handlebar mounted
water bottle holder that holds any
mobile or tablet in either portrait or
landscape position.
