It ’ s not just for getting to and from work , college or the shops ; the bus can be perfect for a trip out too travel

Winchester has a great bus network for getting around the city . Going by bus is a great way of avoiding the hassle of traffic and hard-to-find parking in the busy pre-Christmas period , but it ’ s also a greener option . A full double-decker bus can replace up to 75 cars , reducing traffic volumes and transport emissions .
Buses from the Broadway bus station run as far afield as Southampton , Basingstoke and Andover , but there ’ s also a host of places en route that are worth stopping off at .

Alresford and Austen

Travelling through farmland and villages to the east of Winchester the 64 bus takes about 20 minutes to get to Alresford and you can enjoy great views when you ’ re not driving – especially on a double-decker !
Alresford is a handsome Georgian town with riverside walks , specialist shops and is known for its Watercress Festival in the Spring . It ’ s a great place to stroll around any time of the year – do a bit of window shopping , stop for a pub lunch , or walk up to see the steam engines and restored station on The Watercress Line .
The 64 bus goes on to Alton , but you can stop off at Jane Austen ’ s House in Chawton . Alight at the Lincoln Green stop and then it ’ s a 15-minute walk to the family home of Hampshire ’ s most famous author .

Until 31 December 2024 , single bus fares are fixed at £ 2 under the National Bus Fare Cap Scheme introduced to boost bus travel after Covid lockdown . Add to that free travel for under-5s travelling with a paying adult , concessionary bus passes and Stagecoach ’ s student and young people ’ s discount and it makes hopping on the bus great value .

The 69 bus route takes in Bishop ’ s Waltham and Wickham on its way to Fareham , but every Sunday it stops at Marwell Zoo as well . Providing a direct route from Winchester to the zoo , it ’ s perfect for a car-free family day out with lots to see and do .

Panto by bus

If you can ’ t get enough panto , jump on the 66 bus and head to Romsey ’ s Plaza Theatre . From 10 to 26 January , Romsey Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society are staging their family-friendly panto , Snow White . Owned and run by RAODS , the Plaza is an Art Deco gem , built in 1931 , with shows running throughout the year .
The 66 bus to Romsey runs every half an hour in peak times and takes around 45 minutes from the centre of Winchester to Romsey bus station . The bus stops minutes away from the Plaza ’ s front door .
