Winchester ’ s festive season officially starts when the Christmas lights are switched on . Organised by Winchester BID ( Business Improvement District ) and held from 4.30pm on 14 November , this event has become a family favourite with hundreds gathering on The Broadway for the big moment . The evening also features community heroes , lots of local performers up on stage , song , dance , and Santa on his sleigh .

Winchester ’ s ancient city mill is transformed from 23 November to 5 January with Christmas trees sparkling with blue and silver baubles , inspired by the waters of the River Itchen rushing below . You can also take part in a festive wreath workshop using natural materials , from berries to teasels , on 25 and 26 November ( booking essential ).

It ' s panto season

Oh yes , it is ! There ’ s nothing like a panto dame , and Winchester ’ s favourite dame , Julian Eardley , will be appearing in the title role of Mother Goose at the Theatre Royal from 30 November to 5 January . Families will be ‘ flocking ’ to enjoy this traditional panto with its ‘ eggstraordinary ’ tale about a goose who lays golden eggs . There will be cracking gags , original songs and lots of audience participation ! Oh yes there will !

Nepali supper with a Scottish twist

Burns Night at The Gurkha Museum has been a sell out for the last few years , so book early to enjoy a threecourse Nepali curry feast with a Scottish twist on 24 January . The evening not only celebrates Robert Burns , but the Gurkhas ’ long history with Scottish regiments , their troops fighting side by side from Burma to Bosnia . Enjoy a night of history , poetry , delicious food , whisky and bagpipes . Dress code is black tie with a flourish of tartan .
