ELECTRIC GUITAR Jake Fauber
[ WM ] Tell us about how you got started playing guitar ?
[ Jake Fauber ] My uncle taught me “ Ghost Riders in the Sky ” when I was 10 years old . I was immediately infatuated with the instrument , spent the entire day learning and mastering the melody .
[ WM ] Who were your main guitar influences ?
[ Jake ] It ’ s changed so much over the years ! I cut my teeth playing metal music with my buddies in high school . I loved ( and still love ) Underoath , As I Lay Dying , Norma Jean , etc . When my family started going to church , I was exposed to early Hillsong and was hooked on Droff ’ s and Michael Guy Chislett ’ s parts . Then James Duke and Taylor Johnson in college . Since then it ’ s been guys like Joey Landreth , Tom Bukovac , Taylor Goldsmith , Mateus Asato , and so on . Loads of influences !
[ WM ] You most likely have played worship guitar alongside many other guitarists on the platform . What is your strategy for arranging the guitar parts when two ( or more ) guitarists are on the team ?
[ Jake ] I think being aware of your role and listening are the most important tools a guitarist can have . This is something I ’ m still learning and growing in ! I like to teach that EG 1 holds the melodies and higher triads , where EG 2 holds down the chords . Both are equally as important !
[ WM ] Do you also play outside the church ? If so , tell us about your other guitarist roles ?
[ Jake ] Yep ! I ’ ve been Aaron Williams ’ main guitarist for the better part of 10 or so years , I ’ m a part of an amazing project called Stillcreek ( coming soon !! @ stillcreeksongs ), and a few producers keep me busy with remote session work !
[ WM ] Do you have a home studio setup ? If so , what are you using to record with ? ProTools ? Plug-ins ? Tell us about your studio .
[ Jake ] I ’ ve got a pretty simple setup ! Apollo Twin and Yamaha HS8 ’ s . Use ProTools . Handful of plugins that I use a lot … UA API Preamp , Studer A800 , Oeksound Bloom and Soothe . I keep my process simple . Most of my time and effort has been spent getting the source sounding perfect . I use the plugins just enough to make the tracks sit and feel a bit better .
[ WM ] Your thoughts on modeling units vs . analog pedals ?
[ Jake ] I came up using tube amps . I think it ’ s hard to beat the sound of standing in front of a cranked amp . I think learning on a tube amp teaches you how to look for good guitar tone . The digital world is really amazing , and I love my TONEX pedals so much ( especially my captures :), but I ’ m a big fan of all my amps . That being said , digital solutions such as TONEX solve so many problems and provide an unmatched level of convenience . And when
