the auditorium . So the goals of the leadership should always be a part of that decision , along with other factors like the skill level of the drummers and the acoustical environment . In a vacuum , I don ’ t have a preference . I have had great success using cymbal baffles , shields , cages , and tanks . I have also been in environments that didn ’ t need any of them . As a mixer , we should be unbiased enough to make informed decisions about what would be best for the worship experience and the team we are serving .

[ WM ] Words of encouragement or advice for other audio tech teams ?
[ Luke ] From a mixing standpoint , I would say to do everything you can to stay in your creative / musical / emotional brain while mixing the worship portions of a service . The technical is needed for things to work , but the creative / musical / emotional portion of you is needed to help the music connect with the people in your services .
If you focus too much on the technical when you ’ re mixing , you will have a much harder time creating an environment where people can connect with God . And it ’ s just way more fun to mix when you ’ re enjoying the music and the mix !
I also always encourage church audio guys to build a great relationship with their worship pastor . I honestly consider myself part of the band . I want to achieve the goals my worship pastor has in mind . I ’ m there to collaborate and serve the vision of the worship ministry . That mentality has always served me well , and the worship pastor at Highlands is still one of my closest friends today .
