[ WM ] On the worship platform , what role do you see yourself playing ?
[ Jessica ] I imagine myself as a co-pilot with the worship leader and I hope to facilitate musically whatever is in their heart to do ... being so prepared with the plan that we can ditch it all at a moment ’ s notice . There ’ s no greater joy than instinctively knowing what someone might do next . That kind of relationship can take time to build , but it also involves developing the ability to read a moment , read a room , and read a person .
[ WM ] Describe your rehearsals strategy . What does a successful rehearsal look like to you ?
[ Jessica ] Rehearsal is before the rehearsal !
Personally , beyond the songs we ’ ve prepared , what comes out in spontaneous moments of worship is the catalog of my life .... my history with Jesus , my time in church , and my personal worship combined with spiritual guidance , emotional intelligence , musical dynamics and a prepared team moving as one ... now that ’ s an insane recipe !
Practically speaking , probably 75 % of my prep is listening to new songs over and over . I make notes and chart everything out before ever sitting down to play .
Multitracks . com ’ s Rehearsal Mix is an awesome tool for practicing . You can search just about any worship song and solo out what each instrument is doing on the recording , then mute
[ WM ] Can you list two or three worship albums that inspire your own worship keys playing ?
[ Jessica ] Empires by Hillsong United World Service by Delirious ? Labyrinth by David Baloche
[ WM ] Outline your ‘ live rig ’ on stage for us . Keyboards , software , tracks you use … basically everything .
[ Jessica ] I have a Nord Piano 4 which I essentially use as a MIDI controller . I run Mainstage with my Nord and a Korg Nano Kontrol to control patch volume and effects . I ’ m currently moving everything to Ableton so I ’ ll be able to run tracks simultaneously . I can ’ t live
