She ’ s one of my absolute favorite humans .
[ WM ] We see you also like to teach Bass , Music Directing , Theory etc . Tell us about that ?
[ Cassie ] YES , I DO ! I love teaching . I ’ m starting to offer more pop-up lessons online when I ’ m not on the road ; either one-on-one or with a group . I ’ ll eventually get more instructional videos out there too . God help me !
My undergrad was in Music Education Instrumental K-12 , and I have taught on and off for years , whether in classes or individual . I love when the light goes on in a student ’ s understanding of a concept , or when they get the tools to make real progress and feel encouraged to keep going . I love helping teams work together as well . I ’ ve found having a background in both classical ( being able to read music ) and also playing by ear ( improv / jam band ) helps in giving me the ability to communicate with most musicians in helping translate concepts between players or speak to a student in a way they can understand .
I stumbled into Music Directing before there was a talkback . Back then we would utilize a lot of hand signals or body language , and then some years in , I would show up for sound check and suddenly there was a talkback in front of me . Usually , the MD was the one in the band that musicians naturally looked at for that extra sense of security for “ now ”? ( laughing ). Nowadays , I often end up MD ’ ing while playing bass , and aim to help support the band under the leader as best as possible .
[ WM ] Any words of encouragement or advice for other worship team bass players ?
[ Cassie ] Well , first of all , glad you ’ re here :) Secondly , ... shh ( you know it ’ s actually the best instrument )… thirdly , if your aim is to be someone with integrity ( integration internally and externally ) and deep proficiency on your instrument , there ’ s no telling all the beautiful ways your future will unfold .
