Crowder: The man who graced the very first Cover story of our Worship Musician magazine returns here to let us know what gear he uses to capture the Crowder songs we know and love. A pretty special studio, chock-full of Crowder’ s own personality.
What recording software are you using? ProTools, Abelton Live, GarageBand, Fender Studio One, Logic, Luna etc. ProTools and Ableton Live
Brand of audio interface? 2 Apollo 16’ s.
How many inputs? Do you use line level or preamp channel ADAT expanders for additional channel count? I have 4 dedicated mic chains with preamp, compression chains for vocals and instruments. Using BAE 1073, into tube tech CLB or LA2A, and 2 Telefunken v76’ s with Purple MC77. That’ s a Tom Petty vibe right there and the v76’ s are a bit hot so work great on like an SM7 instead of a cloud lifter. I use a couple of Tascam Dante’ s to get synths and guitar amps into the UA stuff. we do wind up delivering ATMOS mixes to service the DSPs so we had an ATMOS system installed in our recreational listening area so we could comment on mixes constructively without relying on just headphone simulation modeling.
Brand / types of plugins? Waves and Universal Audio
Favorite mastering plug-in? Do you master your music for iTunes, Spotify etc.? I do not master anything, again, leaving that to the professionals, but I will say for turning in roughs or demos there’ s one plugin that I think is just wild for getting some volume and energy and glue on things, IM Pusher. It’ s WAVES, I
believe, and I think IM stands for Infected Mushroom.
What guitar sim plug-ins do you use? I use Kemper and the UA Paradise guitar studio, at least I think that’ s what the UA stuff is called.
External amps / Multi-effect processors( Neural, Line 6, Fractal, etc.)? I have a pedal board hidden in the toe kick of the studio desk that I can route to whatever amp in the amp room that seems appropriate. Using Dante to get the signal back and forth from the control room. It’ s a Frankenstein setup but way versatile!
Do you mostly produce your own music or record music for other people? I don’ t record much for other folks. Mainly a writing space and then when it’ s“ go time” it’ s where I’ m cutting vocals and guitar stuff.
Are you set up to track / record live bands? The house is wired for it but have yet to give it a go.
Do you use an analog or digital mixing console? I run all of synth world into an analogue Toft board for the mic pres, but I’ m in the box.
What Nearfield Monitors( KRK, JBL, IK Multimedia) do you use? Focal Trio11 Be’ s and 2 Focal Sub6’ s.
Do you mix in ATMOS, Surround Sound? I do not mix anything! I rely on the professionals for such a thing, you are welcome for that. But
