[ WM ] What is your primary stage and songwriting guitar , and what do you like about it ?
[ David Funk ] My tried-and-true acoustic for the past several years has been my Martin OM- 21 . It really is a workhorse and is consistent across the board whether traveling or in studio .
[ WM ] What brand / model vocal microphone do you use on stage or in the studio ?
[ David ] We ’ ve recently been really loving the DPA d : facto 4018v both at home church and on the road . It has studio sound with excellent stage noise rejection .
[ WM ] What pick-up system is on your guitar ?
[ David ] L . R . Baggs Anthem all day : it ’ s the only pickup system I recommend to people , and pairs with the smaller body Martin ’ s so well . I usually favor the Mic when blending !
[ WM ] What brand capo do you use ?
[ David ] I use a couple - a quick go to for me is the D ’ Addario NS Capo Pro . I love the low profile and adjustable tension . Recently , however , I was given a G7th Heritage Capo - it ’ s absolutely gorgeous and can just live on your guitar neck which is really nice .
[ WM ] What guitar strings do you prefer ?
[ David ] Martin MA550 Phosphor Bronze - Medium ( 13-56 ). I prefer the medium because I keep my guitar tuned down a whole step ( which the OM-21 handles perfectly ) and these strings bring the body needed for those lower notes .
[ WM ] Are you using a clip-on tuner ? A floor pedal tuner ?
[ David ] I ’ ve always been more of a floor tuner guy — Boss TU-2 all day . the TU-3 has too many lights !
[ WM ] For In-Ear Monitors , what brand are you using ?
[ David ] 64 Audio A18t ’ s . Been using for probably a year or so — they sound insane and we ’ ve always had amazing experiences with their customer service .
[ WM ] What do you use to capture song ideas down with ?
[ David ] I ’ ve tried different apps / methods over the years , but have always come back to Voice Memo ’ s and Apple Notes .
[ WM ] What is a current Worship record you enjoy listening to right now ?
[ David ] Ordinary Ways by Jon Guerra , and Live in the Prayer Room by Jeremy Riddle .
[ WM ] What is your current or upcoming music project ?
[ David ] I ’ m very excited for our next Bethel Music Compilation record that we ’ ll be recording in April .
[ WM ] What is the next piece of gear you would be excited to have ?
[ David ] Honestly - a Brooke Ligertwood Signature Martin . They are incredible guitars !
[ WM ] What advice do you have for our worship leaders , bandmates and tech teams reading this magazine ?
[ David ] Stay curious ; stay childlike . Not just in faith but in life , in music — in it all . We all remember the joy of learning our instruments , those early years . I try to remind myself often that I ’ m living in the dream of my younger self ; it ’ s easy to forget amidst the realities of life , but gratitude will keep us grounded .
