ToneWoodAmp2 Effects for Acoustic Guitars!
The original ToneWoodAmp, which we covered, was launched in 2014 and released to the public in 2015. Since that time many major artists have endorsed and used it including Mike Dawes, George Benson, Andy McKee and Jerry Douglas. And many other guitar companies have strived to copy their acoustic effects in some form or another. Now the company has released the ToneWoodAmp2, but this is not just an update it is a totally new product which also connects to a ToneWoodAmp remote App for smartphones and tablets.
Compared to the original acoustic guitar effects device, the ToneWoodAmp2 is smaller and sleeker in design and the controls are much more intuitive. I installed the unit on a Gibson G-OO acoustic. The ToneWoodAmp2 has builtin effects including Chorus, Delay, Reverb, and Tremolo. Within the Chorus you can also select Vibrato, Chorus, Flanger and Phaser settings. All of the effects are adjustable via the controls on the unit that are held in place by placing the magnetic X-brace inside of your acoustic guitar. This secures the ToneWoodAmp2 to the back of your acoustic. It was easy to charge the device up with a USB-C cable. Then use the included ¼” to ¼” cable to run the pickup from your acoustic / electric guitar to the input of the ToneWoodAmp2. The ¼” output on the ToneWoodAmp goes to your amplifier or PA
system. Once I paired the ToneWoodAmp2 with the app it was easy to adjust the levels, depth, rate and series or parallel, plus overall FX dynamics. All of the effects worked great and were simple to adjust via the app. The ToneWoodAmp2 uses the acoustic sound chamber of your acoustic guitar to create the effects coming out of the sound hole. Or you can send the output to a PA system of amplifier. ToneWoodAmp now offers three different packages, but the bass one starts at $ 310 which is a bargain for these many effects projecting through your acoustic guitar. The velour ear pads were incredibly comfortable with no ear fatigue and listening to Steely Dan music as a reference I heard reinforcement percussion and separation I had never experienced before!
The DT 1990 PRO MKII headphones are the second generation in this series and are aimed at studio mastering, mixing and editing. Like the DT 1770’ s these fully cover your ears and also feature the TESLA. 45( 30 ohms) drivers. The DT 1990 comes with two sets of ear pads Producing velours and mastering velours both of which are extremely comfortable and form fitting. The primary difference I noticed sound wise with the DT 1990 PRO MKII headphones was the pronounced depth of the bass response and more of an airy and spatial sound. I tested these with Toto for sound reference and the sound separation and detail with crisp trebles was outstanding. Both of these beyerdynamic headphones deliver superb sound separation and detail for editing, mixing and mastering your music. For focused applications I would recommend the DT 1770 MKIIs and for overall final mix I feel the open-backed DT 1990 MKII are the best choice.
