[ WM ] What do you use to capture song ideas down with? What is your song writing process?
[ Shantrice ] I use voice memos and notes to capture song ideas. It’ s a very helpful tool to use on the go or in the moment. Some of your best ideas hit you when you’ re not in a studio space, so I record every melody or song idea that comes.
My song writing process is as follows
1. When first entering the writing room, I always love to connect and get to know who I am writing with. It’ s important to hear their story, learn their heart for the church or whatever topic we’ re writing about. This will always create a unity and ease that will help with the writing process.
2. Once a topic is decided, I like to ask the producer or instrumentalist to just play what they are hearing or feel in the moment. This will naturally bring inspiration if no one has come in with an idea( melody or words) wise to start the song idea with.
3. Melody is king so once we establish a melody for a verse, chorus, or bridge usually words will come that work well with what’ s presented.
4. If for the church, the Bible is the best reference or source to give language for an idea or concept so finding passages that speak to that topic is best.
5. Then we pray, seek and find ways to communicate and give language to the idea until its completion.
6. We always listen back, sing it down, make sure it’ s theologically correct and biblically sound. Make sure we have sought the best way to communicate the idea. This is a step that is crucial to the process.
7. Record a demo to have, as a go-to if the song is to be released for a record.
[ WM ] What is the next piece of gear you would be excited to have?
