for most contexts , I ’ ll just plug into whatever keyboard is already there .
When I ’ m looking to unwind and play music that doesn ’ t feel as much like work , I ’ m usually sitting down with my acoustic guitar . I was able to pick up a Taylor 414ce earlier this year that plays like a dream .
[ WM ] If you use a microphone for the stage , studio , or podcast , what brands / models do you use ?
[ David ] For cutting podcasts I typically use a Blue Yeti USB mic , which keeps things simple and is pretty forgiving . For video content we ’ re releasing these days we ’ re using an NTG4 shotgun from Rode , which has been sounding amazing and grabs a lot of detail .
[ WM ] If you play an acoustic guitar , what pickup system is on your guitar ?
[ David ] I ’ m rocking the stock ES2 system in my Taylor 414ce .
[ WM ] What guitar strings do you prefer ?
[ David ] I ’ m partial to Elixirs .
[ WM ] For In-Ear Monitors what brand are you using ?
[ David ] A couple years ago Sennheiser sent us their entire line of universal ears to try out for a review . I ’ ve been using their IE 500 Pro model most of the time .
Rhodes MK IV that I love , but I had the chance to try the new MK8 at NAMM last year and it ’ s just a joy to play .
[ WM ] What are two of your current Worship records you are enjoying right now ?
[ David ] I ’ ve been regularly coming back to “ Over It All ” from New Life Worship ever since they released that album last year . It ’ s a beautifully produced album and feels fresh and different to me . We had the chance to go spend a day out there in Colorado Springs after the album drop last year and Seth from their team , who played keys on the record was kind enough to share some of the backstory around the keys parts and sounds .
Second , it ’ s not a worship record per se , but has always been a spiritual experience for me . I ’ ve been listening to Switchfoot ’ s ‘ Our Version ’ re-release of their classic “ The Beautiful Letdown ” record and it ’ s a blast . While it is a faithful recreation , there ’ s lots of ear candy sprinkled throughout and the mix is a bit wider , so you can really hear and appreciate all the detail that went into it .
[ WM ] What word of advice do you have for our readers in the worship community ?
[ David ] Listen to artists and bands outside of your stream ! One of the biggest practices that opens up my creativity is seeking out music that throws the Spotify or Apple Music algorithm for a loop . It ’ s comfy to stay in your lane and listen to your faves , but a lot of what is at the forefront of worship music right now is coming out of a soup made up of really diverse and interesting genre influences . That kind of creativity only comes by exposing yourself to musical ideas that broaden your awareness and deepen your appreciation for other ’ s God-given creativity .
[ WM ] If we could watch one video of yours or one podcast , which one would you select ?
[ David ] Oof this isn ’ t a ‘ smart ’ marketing answer , because it ’ s not even on our YouTube channel , but it ’ s an honest one : last October I was invited to give a talk at an event in Chicago called the Worship Innovators Conference . My talk was called “ Creating from Within ” and it ’ s probably the truest representation of my heart for worship creatives . I ’ ve flirted with burnout in ministry a bunch of times , and it ’ s tough to balance your desire for excellence with the truth that you need to have something left for the other important parts of your life too . The talk is available to watch for free on the Worship Innovators YouTube channel .
[ WM ] How can we find you ? Website / Social Media / Email address …
[ David ] SundaySounds . com is the place to go if you ’ d like to discover the Sunday Keys App and all the ways we can help you empower you and your team .
[ WM ] What is the next piece of gear you would be excited to have ?
[ David ] Tough one ! I ’ m always keeping an eye out for old analog synthesizers , the more obscure and weird the better . My dream synth would probably be a Jupiter 8 from Roland , out of production since ’ 85 . But in the real world , I ’ d love to one day save up and buy one of the new Rhodes electric pianos that have been coming out over the last couple years . I have a
