the obstacles they encounter and offering solutions
that benefit both humans and wildlife

of Yellowstone Migrations by conservation
photographer and National Geographic
Society Fellow, Joe Riis. A wildlife biologist turned
photojournalist, Riis has spent a decade documenting
the last great migrations of pronghorn antelope,
mule deer and elk through the Greater Yellowstone
Ecosystem and Yellowstone National Park, an area that
comprises roughly seven million acres of wild land that
intersects with private ranches, compounds, highways
and towns.
With evidence of their annual crossings in the region
dating as far back as 7000 years, thousands of these
animals move in herds with the changing seasons to
feed and give birth. Recorded by strategically placed,
non-intrusive wildlife camera traps, Riis’s images show
the animals as they cross swollen rivers, trudge up
mountainsides, race across remote wind-swept plateaus,
