those who owned and operated the lodge.
Last fall we were able to walk along the
shores of Sand Lake with Marge and
Dan Galles who owned the lodge in the
late 1960s. Marge managed the lodge
during their time. Her son Dan grew up
spending his summers working there
with his brothers and sister.
Under their ownership the Sand Lake
Lodge was a true family owned and
operated business. The whole family
would spend the summer at the lodge,
each pitching in to help keep the lodge
running and guests comfortable.
Their “to do” list was endless: taking
care of guests, chopping and hauling
firewood, maintaining buildings and
equipment, performing administrative
duties, transporting supplies such as food
and everything else they needed to keep
the place running. They also cooked
three meals a day with a huge feast every
Sunday, cleaned guest cabins and rooms,
rented things like boats, and lead tours on
horseback. The Galles family treasured
their summers at the lodge, even if for
their young children it meant not being
able to participate in typical summer
activities l
