WLM | history those who owned and operated the lodge. Last fall we were able to walk along the shores of Sand Lake with Marge and Dan Galles who owned the lodge in the late 1960s. Marge managed the lodge during their time. Her son Dan grew up spending his summers working there with his brothers and sister. Under their ownership the Sand Lake Lodge was a true family owned and operated business. The whole family would spend the summer at the lodge, each pitching in to help keep the lodge running and guests comfortable. Their “to do” list was endless: taking care of guests, chopping and hauling firewood, maintaining buildings and equipment, performing administrative duties, transporting supplies such as food and everything else they needed to keep the place running. They also cooked three meals a day with a huge feast every Sunday, cleaned guest cabins and rooms, rented things like boats, and lead tours on horseback.
