F
or years (and we’re talking well over 100 years
here), people have flocked to Yellowstone National
Park to take in its wonders. And wondrous
they were (and are!). So fantastic were the early
reports of Yellowstone that their messengers were
deemed the spinners of tall tales. In 1807, former Lewis &
Clark expedition member John Colter described Yellowstone
and was met with mocking disbelief. The term “Colter’s Hell”
was a tongue-in-cheek reference to the poor man’s accurate
stories for years after.
