Photography and painting by Bernice Shuster
ernice Shuster of Rock Springs has a lifetime love of art, and began taking classes in high school. “When I was in high school I loved to doodle. I drew mountains, streams and forests – I was drawing Wyoming, and I lived in Missouri!” She began taking art classes in college, learning how to draw and use different media. “I didn’t learn to paint at that time, though,” Bernice says. Bernice is active at the Young at Heart Senior Center in Rock Springs, where painting classes were offered. She was able to join the class in 2011, and applied her previous knowledge and natural ability to the medium. “I learned how to mix colors, how to create shadows and highlights, as well as how to transfer paintings to canvas.” Best part – the classes are full of friends. “Everyone’s talking and laughing -- it’s a real community,” Bernice smiles. “We have lots of fun times.” Bernice’s paintings have become treasured gifts for family. “All of my family members have a painting from Bea,” she says. She’s sold a few, and has won awards. “I entered four of my paintings into the 2013 Sweetwater County Fair, and all four won first place,” Bernice says.
“I also entered four photographs and three of them won first place!” The painting classes at the Young at Heart Senior Center in Rock Springs are on a brief hiatus while the instructor is unavailable, and Bernice is excited for them to begin again. In the meantime, she enjoys painting at home for
enjoyment and has paintings for sale. We’re excited when she shares her paintings and photos on our Wyoming Lifestyle Magazine Facebook page, and she keeps us in the know on events happening in Sweetwater County – be on the lookout on our wall for more from Bernice Shuster, an inspirational Wyoming woman!
