In Her Honor:

Remembering Nymphadora 'Tonks' Lupin

Nymphadora Tonks was born in a time of relative peace in the spring of 1973 to Ted and Andromeda Tonks—a match that caused quite a scandal in pureblood society, as Mrs. Tonks was a pureblood from the Black line and her husband was proudly Muggleborn.

A clumsy child, Nymphadora started Hogwarts in the fall of 1984. She was sorted into Hufflepuff house, known for its hardworking and loyal nature. 'She was a clever girl,' her former head of house Pomona Sprout recalled. 'A tad mischievous, but you would be hard pressed to find someone with a larger heart.'

After graduating from Hogwarts in 1991--incidentally the same year Harry Potter began--she applied for the Auror training program and joined the ranks as a full Auror in 1994, the year before Voldemort’s return to power.

Nymphadora was a bright and capable Auror under the tutelage of famed dark wizard catcher Alastor 'Mad-Eye' Moody. Though stealth was not her strong suit, Nymphadora was a master of disguise thanks to her rare metamorphic talent. She was often seen sporting bubblegum pink hair, preferring to stand out rather than blend in.

In the years that followed, Nymphadora joined the covert group dedicated to vanquishing the Dark Lord, The Order of the Phoenix. The group included the Weasley family, with whom she became close.

Sirius Black, another member of the Order, and Nymphadora had a friendly relationship, a former Order member confided. It was through this friendship that Nymphadora met her eventual husband and known werewolf, Remus Lupin, who one of Black’s best friends from his Hogwarts years. Tonks and Lupin married in the summer of 1997

'You could tell the two were just meant for each other,' Molly Weasley, a dear friend of the couple, said through tearful eyes. 'He was so closed off and she was so open and well, you know what they say: opposites attract.'

The Order spent numerous hours tracking Lord Voldemort and his Death Eaters as well as protecting young Harry Potter. Nymphadora was a close confidant and friend to Potter. Tonks often worked as one of his guards, both in and out of Hogwarts, thanks to her disguising ability.

Nymphadora was probably best known for her quick wit and optimistic personality. 'She always knew how to make someone laugh,' Daily Prophet reporter Ginevra Potter remarked.

The Lupins had one child together, Edward Remus Lupin. Teddy was born in April 1998 at the height of the Second Wizarding War. Both Remus and Nymphadora remained active Order members until their untimely deaths only a few weeks later.
