Charming Chef
For those of us who attended Hogwarts, the mouth-watering memories of dining in the Great Hall often came back to us as we set off on our own and were suddenly thrust into the ‘real world’ of living on our own—and eating many, many a bowl of ramen noodles. To alleviate some of that suffering, Witch Weekly reached out to the House Elves to see if they would share a recipe or two with our readers. Lo and behold, a week later, Libby the House Elf apparated straight into our offices on a Tuesday morning! To our surprise, gone was the drab tea towel that some may remember from their youth, but instead Libby stood before us in a bright pink maxi dress fashioned from a child’s size Strawberry Shortcake shirt with a purple ribbon tied at an empire waistline for the elf and accented her outfit with gold bangles and a straw sunhat.
Libby informed us that the discussion of whether to share Hogwarts recipes had brought out some conflicting views among the House Elf community. However, the majority vote favoured on the side of sharing with Witch Weekly given that foremost is their love is for the students of Hogwarts and they want to keep contributing to their lives. Given this, they decided to share our favourite treat: Treacle Tart!
It is important to remember that House Elves have their own unique form of magic, so we’ve worked with Libby to determine which wizarding spells to use in place of their own magic.
Hogwart House Elf Special Treacle Tart
Ingredients:
1 premade pie crust (of
course, the House Elves
make theirs fresh)
1 cup of treacle (dark caro)
syrup
1⁄4 cup of heavy cream
1 cup of bread crumbs
1 lemon (zested)
2 tablespoons of fresh
lemon juice
Preheat your oven to 190 Celsius (House Elves can control temperature of the Hogwarts ovens by a snap of magic, but we suggest purchasing a Celcio-Speedometer Oven Gauge to enchant your home appliance quickly to the temperature needed).
Press the pie crust pastry evenly into the bottom of your pie tin or plate.
Mix the syrup, cream, bread crumbs, lemon zest, and lemon juice together in a bowl and pour into the pie crust.
Bake in the preheated oven until the filling is set, about 35 to 40 minutes.
Allow to cool for 10 minutes. The House Elves cast a 'keeping charm,' as they call it, to keep the tart warm until serving. We suggest using histinai (the stasis charm) to keep the tart warm for later enjoyment!
