Early Life
An India-born Sharma moved to
Reading when he was five years
old along with his parents. He
was brought up in the Reading
suburbs of Earley and Whitley
Wood and attended Reading
Blue Coat School in Sonning.
He was graduated from the
University of Salford, with a
BSc in Applied Physics with
electronics in 1988.
Subsequently, Sharma qualified
as a chartered accountant.
He was under training with
Deloitte Haskins & Sells in
Manchester before moving
into corporate finance advisory
with Nikko Securities. Later he
joined Skandinaviska Enskilda
Banken in senior roles - as
an advisor to clients in the
private and corporate equity
sector on cross border mergers
and acquisitions, listings, and
restructurings.
At the general election in 2017,
Sharma won his seat with a
reduced margin, a majority of
2,876. On being re-elected,
Sharma wrote on his website:
“Having grown up locally in
Reading and being very much
a local Reading man, I am
delighted to have been re-
elected for a constituency in
my home town.”
Early Parliamentary
Career
Between July 2010 and
February 2011, Sharma
served as a member of the
Science and Technology
Select Committee. Between
September 2014 and
March 2015, he served as
a member of the Treasury
Select Committee. During
Sharma’s term of office in
Treasury Select Committee,
the committee has looked
into in which manner
financial services customers
Sharma is a Fellow of the Royal
Society of Arts. He is also a
governor of a local primary
school in Reading. Earlier he
served as a chairman of the
political think tank Bow Group’s
economic affairs committee.

In the year 2010, Sharma was
elected as the Member of
Parliament for Reading West
after winning a majority of 6,004.
