The idea behind sculpting is to show
history. Sculpting always showed
the stages and history. Indians are
familiar with sculptures from the eras of
Buddhism and Jainism.
Bronze:
The statues and idols of
gods and goddess in Indian temples
are made of bronze. From the period
of Harappan civilization, we found a
dancing girl sculpture which was made
with bronze. The dancing girl is from
Mohenjo-Daro and a few sculptures
are found in sites of Harappa &
Mohenjo-Daro which is Pakistan in the
present day. Later many of the bronze
sculptures were made and all are part
of Indian history.
Stone: The walls of sacred temples
are covered with the sculptures of gods
and goddess. Looking at the stone
sculpture in temples, we will draw the
real picture. The identification of the
stone sculpture is easy from ancient
days itself and this shows that stone
sculpture is an old art. The stone
sculptures can be of a different kind
of stone. It can be sandstone and
limestone.
Wood Carving: Wood carving
is a famous and continuous form of
sculpting in India. You will find wood
carving till today in small works. Wood
carving is part of integral housing and
the furniture these days. Carving on
wood can be intricate and it is a feature
of furniture.
The portray of the ancient times were
less of wood but wood carving is
more into the modern world. Carving
is a brilliant art which is universal
handicraft. There are also many
techniques and one must be skilled
to do wood carving.
Clay: Clay sculptures are one of
the most found in today’s days. The
smooth and soft texture of clay can
be turned into beautiful sculptures. It
includes some of the techniques to
create clay sculptures as well. The
molding of clay into sculptures is one
of the crucial parts of sculpting in
modern India and this can be called
as contemporary art.

us about ancient times. There are
some famous sculptures that are well
known and to be known. The Ashoka
pillars are the top famous sculptures
of India, then come Ajanta and Ellora
caves. The sculpture that got famous
from Indus valley civilization is
Dancing girl from Mohenjo-Daro.
Sizes of sculptures: Sculptures
can be of different sizes and there
is no limit of size for this art. The
giant sculptures and the miniature
sculptures, both can are real and
artistic. Sculpting is irrespective
of size from ancient days and it is
evident till date.
