NO-1 Kantha
Embroidery
Kantha Embroidery got its fame
from Tripura. This design is
commonly seen on sarees,
dresses, and dhoti that people
wear in Odisha and West Bengal.
The embroidery is made with silk
thread. Earlier Kantha embroidery
was known as Lepkantha or Sujni
Kantha.
These designs aren’t just made on sarees
or dhoti’s, it is used as covers for
boxes and mirrors as well. Usually,
geometrical shapes, birds and
flowers are the prominent designs of
Kantha Embroidery.
NO-2 Scroll Paintings
In this form of art, paintings are
horizontally done. The other name to
scroll paintings is known as Pat Chitra in
Kolkata. Natural colors are gracefully used
to make these paintings. These paintings
look bold and bright. It is usually made on
thick fabrics.
Usually, landscapes are made in
this type of painting. At first, this
originated in China and Japan.
Later it spread to India.
NO-3 Terracotta
Craft
Terracotta is a clay-based sculpture craft
that got its popularity from West Bengal.
Usually, earthenware and flower pots
comprise the terracotta craft. The Vishnupur
temple is the best example of the terracotta
craft. The materials used for terracotta craft
are inexpensive and this form of art has a
great history.
NO-4 Ghurni
Yet another cute form of art is that of
Ghurni. It is a process of making clay dolls.
These clay dolls are beautifully sculpted in
Krishnanagar, it is a place in West Bengal.
At every handicraft museum, these dolls are
displayed. Ghurni is best seen in Shankar’s
doll museum in New Delhi. Clay dolls of
birds, insects, fruits, flowers, gods and
goddesses are made. Through clay dolls,
interesting scenes have been displayed.
For example, the Tea Garden and Pandit
Sabha.
NO-5 Sholapith Crafts
White decorative pieces are made in this
form of art. The other name of this art is
herbal ivory. The most common decorative
pieces are made for brides, mandaps,
horses and all the Hindu God and Goddess.
This art is pure and beautiful. The shola art
designers are known as Malakar’s. They
make garlands, fancy head wears and this
art is famous in West Bengal. The white
substance used in this form of art is made
from the Shola plant.

Art and crafts of Bengal have an aesthetic
look. Some of them are vibrant, while
others are simple and pure. Bengal is the
land of talent. Art and craft have drastically
innovated over time. You can either stick to
