10 THINGS TO DO ON A DAY TRIP TO WEST KIRBY
Ever since its heyday as a Victorian seaside resort , West Kirby has attracted pleasure seekers for its breath-taking views across to the hills of north Wales and its sandy beaches . But now it has vintage boutiques , local food producers , craft beer bars and award-winning chippies too . Here ’ s our pick of the best things to do on a daycation to West Kirby .
Take a stroll along the Marine Lake
Go seal spotting at Hilbre Island
The pathway around the man-made , saltwater lake covers just over a mile and is one of the most popular activities for daytrippers to West Kirby . The lake wall is surrounded on three sides by the waters of the Dee Estuary , so when the tide comes in , an optical illusion makes it look as though the people strolling around the lake path are walking on water .
Visit the beach
If the weather and tides allow , taking a walk out to Hilbre Island is an absolute must when you ’ re in West Kirby and an experience you will never forget . The summer months provide a perfect opportunity to see grey seals swimming just off-shore , bobbing their heads above the water and watching those on the island . They pay close attention , as once the public leaves as the tide comes in , the seals come ashore .
If you are planning a visit , you must allow yourself enough time to leave Hilbre at least three hours before high water . It takes about one hour to cross the 2 miles to Hilbre .

Small but perfectly formed . West Kirby beach may only be 300m long but at low tide there are 2km of vast sand flats to enjoy . Bring your bucket and spade or simply soak up the spectacular views of Hilbre Islands and the , sometimes snowcapped , Welsh hills in the distance . During the tourist season , the beach is patrolled by RNLI lifeguards . wirrallife . com 29
