Welcome to Cars ‘n’ Coffee Liverpool. Many dream of owning a Porsche. This month we were graced with two special cars - Porsche 911 - one old and one new - four generations apart. A brand new 911 known as the 992 - owned by Martin Davis, a member of the Porsche Owners Club GB Cheshire, who had just taken delivery of this latest car. And Justin Spangler’s fully restored (by renowned Porsche restorer Neil Rainger & Joe Meher), 1990 Porsche 911-964 model, which was completed a week before the meeting. All Porsche age gracefully. As time passes they somehow become more relevant. It’s between times we find the new current shape Porsche 911- 992 has become an evolved form of the 1963 original. It’s grown in size and increased its power output by double. It has matured with the activity it was designed for. Yet it remains pure, simple, bound by the technology of the period. Compare the years and generation of the 911. It could be considered as lack of imagination, but that is not why we’re here. The past is an experience in itself. It’s a moment of reflection every time we see a vintage Porsche. To realise the design tells a story half a century old. I'm sure when purchasing and studying the magnificent detail of the vehicle, our minds turn to the future too, if these cars have stayed intact for 50 years, where will it be in another 50? We were delighted to welcome for the first time at the meeting a very knowledgeable classic car enthusiast Iian Tyrell with his original, rare and unmolested early 1977 Jaguar XJS V12 (5.3 litre). Similar to the white XJS driven by Simon Templar in the television series ‘Return of The Saint’. This Jaguar was discovered in circa 2000, having only 10,000 miles recorded and one lady owner, with an exclusive address in Kensington. This Jaguar appears in amazing original condition today. The coachwork is very straight with only a few age related marks. Finished in its original colour of Squadron Blue with black painted rear panel and original polished Kent alloy wheels with excellent Pirelli P4000 tyres; it even retains a single door mirror (later models had two). Take a look inside and the originality continues; the light tan reclining seats are in fine order. There is also the 'new for the time' benefit of electric windows and inertia seat belts fitted for front and rear seat passengers. Succeeding the Jaguar E-Type, the XJ-S was a pure luxury Grand Touring motor car that provided, although controversial, tasteful and aerodynamic styling (0.38cd (drag coefficient)). The silky smooth 5.3 litre engine, originally fitted in the E-Type, was updated to meet new emission and economy requirements; fuel injection and electronic ignition being the main differences to the earlier E-Type power units. These early Jaguars are now being sought by collectors and enthusiasts. Thanks to BAC Mono super car built in Speke Liverpool. Our chosen charity this month was Widnes Food Bank. The donations have been weighed, a total amount of 214.8 kg of food and an extra £54.85 donated in the three hours. Until next time, see you all again Sunday 29th September 2019. Same time, same place for a Coffee Origin, a Char Sui Bun and steamed Hotdog bun!
