W FOOD & DRINK L IT'S ALL GO AT THE WRO! For the last 12 and a half years The Wro in West Kirby has been serving the community from its corner on Grange Road. Run by Howie and Sally Boyd, the Bar and Loft has seen generations of people in the area enjoy socialising and celebrating their special events. Wirral Life caught up with Sally to find out more… Where did you get the name from? “Lots of people have asked us about our unusual name. It goes back about 1100 years to the time of the Vikings when they arrived somewhere between West Kirby and Meols on the shores of Wirral having been driven out of Ireland. They had their own language, a trading port and created a mini self-governing state. Old rental documents refer to ‘the Wro’ meaning ‘the corner’ in West Kirby so that’s where we got it from! By the time 19th century maps were compiled, the name had been lost so we decided to bring it back.” What can we find at the Wro? “Well we’ve been here serving customers for the past 12 and a half years whether that’s just people popping in for a locally roasted coffee, chilling with a glass of wine from one of our specially selected small producers or enjoying one of our range of gins while listening to our live music on Thursday and Sunday evenings! We’re open everyday from 12pm until late, and when you get hungry we have our seasonal small plates menu available or our Supper Club in the Loft on Thursday evenings (bookings) and our Wro Wroasts available on Sundays from 2pm (bookings) You can find it all on our website at: the-wro.co.uk” It’s not just a bar is it, but part of the community? Yes, in the Loft we encourage groups to get together here. We’re very proud of our Wro Community! It’s been building up over a number of years. The Readers Club is the longest running, it has been established for ten years. They meet once a month on a Wednesday evening at 7.30pm. Members choose one book every month which is then reviewed the following month. We also have our fabulous French and Spanish Clubs which go from strength to strength! They have regular meets, socials and screen films. There is also a monthly film club! But it’s not all evenings. We live in such a fabulous part of the world and our enthusiastic Walking Group loves to appreciate it! Once a month, members of the ‘Wro on the Go’ group meet for coffee, croissants and bucks fizz before setting off on regular walks. Plus they go on outings in UK and Europe - they get everywhere! For wine lovers, working in partnership with our wine merchant Gerrard Seel we host legendary wine tasting evenings and dinners during the year with guest speakers from our wineries.
