INTERIOR INSPIRATION BY KATE KINGSTON Kate Kingston, Managing Director of Kingston Shaw, an interior design company with offices on the Wirral, London and Dubai, shares with us the latest trends for creating the perfect home. ART FOR ART’S SAKE Recently I have purchased some new art for both the office and for home, an indulgent hobby that I love. However, I notice that when I mention it to people they screw their faces up and tend to take a deep breath, inferring that this must be an expensive hobby! Far from it, I am not in the habit or market for buying a Picasso, but I do like to find new artists and I find myself framing almost anything and declaring it art. Bearing the above in mind, I thought it maybe useful to share some of our art sources with you, because as we all know, a well-placed piece of art can make or break a room, so here are a few of our resources and tips for making the most out of your art and redefining your space. 1 Framing is key, whether you are framing your loved ones penmanship, kids hand paintings or a Goya ensure the frame enhances the piece and suits the subject matter. Splurge and go for the museum quality glass as it will protect your art and prevent nasty glares. Framing all your art in the same frames adds a contemporary feel or for a more eclectic look mix contemporary frames with vintage and play with the scale. 3 56 wirrallife.com Never buy any piece of art you are not crazy about, if it doesn’t speak to you, why would you want to hang it in your house and look at it for years? Don’t be swayed by anyone else’s opinion trust your art gut (it’s located just below your ‘I should have bought two of those’ guts). Invest in new artists, it is so satisfying, joining someone on the start of their career, you never know they maybe the next Damian Hurst. We are loving new young local artist Femi Da Costa Greaves who can be contacted through Instagram @femi_dacosta Finally, if you are anything like me then grouping anything will give you immense pleasure, the more obtuse the better as seen here, but be warned, if you don’t map it out and plan it properly it will look cluttered and not accidentally curated. Hang the unusual, it doesn’t have to be a square piece of canvas or a photograph, art comes in all shapes and sizes. Consider hanging a gun toting hare like this one from www.grahamandgreen.co.uk 4 5 6 Don’t get hung up about art, choose what you like, it’s all subjective and no one is right or wrong.
