CUSTOM FITTING
BY TOM ATKINSON , PGA GOLF PROFESSIONAL
Custom fitting - what is it and do you need it ? These days you ’ ll find it difficult to come across a golf facility that doesn ’ t have some sort of launch monitor .
The most important thing is understanding the way golfers swing . The shaft matching a golfer ' s swing is about 80 percent of the fitting process , with length , loft , lie and grip making up the other 20 percent . that ' s stiffer at the bottom . Swingers can hit shafts with higher torques whereas hitters need lower torque .
Interesting hey , this is where the launch monitor plays it ’ s part , the feedback is instant .
Then there ’ s the loft and the lie of the club . We are all built differently and will deliver the club to the ground differently . The manufacturer has designed the club so that the ball will fly square only when the sole is flush to the ground . If the toe of the club is digging in then the club is too flag and the opposite if the heel strikes first . Launch it higher than average then we can decrease the loft of the clubs - getting the idea ?
A golfer is either a hitter or a swinger , think of it like this hitters , like Tyrell Hatton or Tiger Woods , are aggressive and create a lot of acceleration , while swingers , like Ernie Els or Justin Rose , are much smoother .
It ’ s important when it comes to shafts , to know about the needs of a swinger versus a hitter , and which style of player is more prevalent .
More than 75 percent of all golfers are hitters . Swingers can hit a shaft that ' s got more flex at the bottom , while hitters need a shaft
Ultimately golf is a preference sport , there ’ s no right or wrong , you ’ ve got to be comfortable so there are a number of different types of head to choose from out there .
At Heswall we use GC2 with head motion technology to measure you up .
