TRIUMPH STREET SCRAMBLER by Mark Tipton
Launched in 2017 , the Street Scrambler bloodline has an unparalleled history that began in the early 1960s . Triumph say the original Bonneville was credited with being a race winner straight out of the crate , and the bike of choice for dirt racers to strip and modify .
With all the Street Scrambler ’ s custom style , thrilling performance , comfortable easy handling , and high specification equipment , the new 2021 Street Scrambler has beautifully evolved with a Euro 5 engine update delivering lower emissions , and more premium custom style and detailing . In line with other members of the Bonneville family , the 2021 Street Scrambler gets modifications . Triumph has taken the opportunity to apply visual improvements to a bike that ’ s proved remarkably popular since its launch in 2017 . More than 13,700 Street Scramblers have found buyers since then , with the model ’ s customisability clearly forming a large part of the appeal , with 120 optional accessories on offer and some 80 % of customers opting to add extras when placing their order .
Thrilling torque-rich Bonneville performance New Euro 5 engine update with lower emissions . Impressive torque delivery with peak torque of 80Nm at a low 3,250rpm . Strong peak power of 65PS at 7,250rpm . Unmistakeable sound of a British twin from the distinctive high-level exhaust . You won ’ t notice the performance difference between the 2020 and 2021 models . What you will spot are the visual updates for this year . They ’ re particularly noticeable from the left of the bike , where there ’ s a new aluminium number board on the side panel , complete with an embossed ‘ Street Scrambler ’ logo . The covers over the throttle bodies are new , too , and so are the aluminium headlight brackets . From the other side , you might notice a new heel guard , and there ’ s a change to the seat material to make it more upmarket .
Equipment Instruments and Controls : Modern classics aren ’ t exactly dripping in tech , but Triumph has done a good job of giving the Street Scrambler exactly what it needs , no less , no more . Maintaining that authentic character and timeless DNA , the Street Scrambler features distinctive wide-spaced forks , high level twin exhaust , minimal bodywork , wide handlebars and wire spoked wheels with black hubs and rims . For the new 2021 generation , additional premium touches and details have been added including the new aluminium number board with embossed Street Scrambler logo , incorporated into the new side panel .
James Bond ’ s stunt coordinator Lee Morrison was asked how he came to choose Triumph motorcycles for the crucial action sequences in No Time To Die . “ For the film we rode the Scrambler absolutely flat out , I mean as aggressive as you can ride a motorcycle , lighting it up off-road on tough terrain in Scotland , drifting it through really slippery streets in Matera [ Italy ], hitting steps flat out in third gear , quick direction changes , big jumps , everything you could imagine , and that bike performed brilliantly . The whole stunt team realised very quickly that these were amazing bikes .”
And what did you love about the Scrambler ? “ Ah it ’ s just so much fun , isn ’ t it ! Get on it , and it ’ s an absolute blast straight off . I ’ d switch everything off [ Off-Road Pro mode ] and ride that thing like it was a motocross bike , couldn ’ t stop grinning ! I remember being worried before filming about potential electrical issues ... I didn ’ t realise that every single electrical connection during Triumph ’ s testing process is completely waterproofed – not many manufacturers do that . I had zero breakdowns with those electricals for the whole shoot , and that ’ s with riding day in day out , through rivers and across riverbeds through four inches , six inches , up to a foot and a half of water .
In summary : A serious back-to-basics bike with the high-end appeal of the Triumph brand and cool retro looks , the Street Scrambler ’ s formula – like the Bonneville Scrambler that preceded it – has proved enduringly appealing . The changes for 2021 are only likely to boost that appeal .
Yes , the Steve McQueen and James Bond special editions add another layer of coolness . Go and test one immediately ! I guarantee you will not want to give it back .
