CHUNG KU by Si Hall & Arthur Gold
Chung Ku Restaurant was first opened in Columbus Quay , Liverpool in 2000 . It rapidly became the North West ’ s most popular and prestigious restaurant receiving an award from the Good Food Guide .
The restaurant is dynamic and trendy , offering a wide range of dishes to suit the palate of both Chinese and British Clientele . It ’ s no wonder it became one of the UK ’ s leading Chinese restaurants and a sought after venue for many charity fundraising events and popular choice for entertaining affluent and famous celebrities .
Chung Ku is a sophisticated Chinese restaurant , with spectacular views from the exterior design . The Ship Bow inspired building is situated on the promenade fronting the River Mersey with views overlooking the Wirral across . The glass-panelled building is accentuated by glowing corridor of artefacts , with a perfect balance of modernity and traditional architecture along the Kings Dock .
There ’ s Chinese food , then there ’ s Chinese food . By that we mean authentic Chinese food actually eaten by Chinese communities . A lot of the dishes that spring to mind when you think of your favourites have over time generally been created for the western palate . You only had to take a look around to see why everyone raves about Chung Ku ’ s authenticity .
For starters , we ordered a selection of traditional dim sum to share …
Out first was ‘ Cheung Fun ’. Rice noodle rolls filled with scallops and char sui pork . Very delicate and quite difficult to create , but these were made to perfection .
Char Sui Bao , a steamed fluffy dough pork bun ( Chinese bacon butty ) – sweet , sticky and lovely .
Lor Mai Gai , this was a sticky rice wrapped in a Lotus tea leaf and flavoured with pork , chorizo , shrimps and mushroom . We ’ ve never tasted a better version than this . Super moreish too .
Then a trio of dipping authentic Dim Sum arrived …
Wortip , a shanghai dumpling filled with pork , steamed and pan fried ( like a Gyoza ).
Filo Pas - King Prawn dumplings , Sushi Roll tempura , again all very tasty , moist and surprisingly light .
For mains , we ordered a whole Seabass , specially filleted for visual effect , drizzled in sweet and sour sauce . Beautifully presented and perfect to share .
Now for a bit of opulence …
Soft shell crab and squid , with chilli / garlic flakes and a whole baked lobster on a bed of ginger , spring onion and light crispy noodles . Wow , these did not disappoint , packed full of flavour and really substantial portions .
Three Roast Meat ( off the bone ) – Honey roast char sui , Roast duck and Crackled Pork , served with rice and salad , again another classic dish done extremely well .
Verdict …
We thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience – the views are like no other , the food was just delicious , the atmosphere relaxed and the kind and gentle staff were fantastic ! The best Chinese restaurant in town .
