TAKE A JOURNEY INTO SPACE THIS AUTUMN
We’re entering the last chapter of Wirral’s amazing year
as Borough of Culture for the Liverpool City Region. This
incredible programme of cultural events is up for not one,
but two Wirral Life Awards – with the whole Borough of
Culture year nominated for Tourism & Event of the Year and
May’s outdoor spectacular The Witching Hour shortlisted for
Outstanding Contribution to Arts.
The final series of events promises to take Wirral to the stars
and beyond and encourage you to look up, as we start to look
ahead to 2020. Over the coming weeks, these events will fly you
to the moon and immerse you in the cosmos through amazing
installations and major events – including the return of fireworks
spectacular River of Light.
Constellations presents Studio Joanie Lemercier at West Kirby
takes you on a breathtaking journey through the universe from
Friday 18 – Sunday 20 October. This immersive experience
turns Marine Lake into a portal to the stars with a sound and
light installation projected onto a huge wall of water particles.
Running every 30 minutes from 7pm with the final performance
at 9.30pm, the display can be seen from the south side of Marine
Lake, next to West Kirby Sailing Club.
Taking inspiration from the Borough of Culture’s themes of
discovery, exploration and the great outdoors, it is the first
commission as part of a Liverpool City Region project which
is designed to inspire local communities to rediscover their
neighbourhoods and spend time stargazing. The Constellations
series will also see artists working in Liverpool, St Helens, Sefton,
Halton and Knowsley over the coming weeks with information
on all the free commissions available at constellationslcr.co.uk.
After this dazzling trip to the stars, set a course for the moon in
Birkenhead Town Hall from Friday 25 October. UK artist Luke
Jerram’s world-famous installation Museum of the Moon will
be installed in the Assembly Room until Friday 15 November.
This magnificent setting will allow you to get up close with the
renowned installation which features detailed imagery of the
lunar surface, accompanied by award-winning sound design.
Details of public viewing times and an exciting programme of
accompanying activities can be found at visitwirral.com and
@imaginewirral on Twitter.
Seeing our Borough of Culture year out with a bang, River of
Light will return to New Brighton and Liverpool waterfronts
on Sunday 3 November. The event starts at 5pm, with family-
friendly entertainment and hot food and drink stalls outside the
Floral Pavilion, before the extraordinary fireworks display at
6.30pm. This highlight of Wirral’s annual events calendar is one
of the region’s biggest and brightest fireworks displays and will
be an incredible finale to our Borough of Culture year. There will
also be dazzling fireworks in parks across Wirral with displays
in Birkenhead Park and Central Park on Saturday 2 November,
and Lingham Park, Meyer Park, Mersey Park, Woodchurch
Leisure Centre and Leasowe Adventure Play Area on Tuesday 5
November.
