REVIEW OF LAURA PURCELL 'THE CORSET' BY SUE PORTER
This is one for a cosy fire, the lights on low and the dog asleep on your
foot! Well researched and a superb second book from the author of the
Silent companions.
Laura Purcell introduces you to Ruth who is one of the main characters. A
young girl who ends up working for her Mother’s employer after a torrid
experience in her home. Her mother, a seamstress who loses her sight
and has to “sell” her daughter to pay off her debts. The employer owns a
beautiful dress makers where they are renown for their fine embroidery.
However this shop has a very, very dark secret. Ruth starts working for the
owner and her daughter. The other girls working there appear too scared
to talk or make eye contact with Ruth. Why? Ruth soon finds out to her
own peril.
Dorothea Truelove is on a mission to find out why women commit crime.
She meets Ruth in prison after being informed, a fine murderess is being
held within the walls. Once she encounters Ruth, Dorothea cannot
quite believe what Ruth is telling her. Dorothea has a factual mind, and
struggles to believe Ruth’s tale of supernatural powers, murder and
slavery. Dorothea and Ruth become embroiled in each other’s story. The
tale twists and turns and leads to an explosive ending! Gripping plot,
beautifully written and captures the lives of restricted Victorian women
in a remarkable way. A must read if you like fast page turners and being
scared (a lot!).
