Ever watched the 1969 movie ‘The Italian Job’ starring Michael Caine and the
trio of Minis? Just imagine the Quincy Jones tune ‘On Days like these’ playing in
your head and the collective sight of all the wonderful vehicles at Cars and Coffee
Liverpool. A number of Minis made their presence this month on front row of the
Chung Ku Restaurant, where Ger Roberts road rally Mini Clubman 1275GT stood
proud with Matthew Eaton British racing green sprint mini and Jamie Smith rather
pink racing mini. You couldn’t get a more British lineup topped with Peter Smith’s
stunning Mk3 Police Mini Cooper S that served its time in Liverpool Wavertree
area.
As you know, in the movie the Minis were surrounded by mainly Itailan cars in
Turin, well this setting couldn’t be better (apart from actually being in Turin).
David Gidman from HR Owen Lamborghini - a regular Wirral Life contributor -
made a somewhat grand entrance in his colourful convoy of Raging Bulls, ranging
from Hurricans Performante, Gallardos and Aventador SV, it was a vibrant lineup
of Orange, Luminous Greens, to Space Yellows and Reds certainly turned a grey
blustery Sunday morning into quite the opposite. But an Italian lineup wouldn’t
be complete without Fiat Abarths or a slight hint of Alfa Romeo’s especially David
Aspley’s beautiful red Alfa GT Junior and Mr Billington’s Ferrari F12 finished in
a smooth Ferrari Red with a factory painted Italian coloured flag stripe running
down the middle. The owner had a wonderful experience collecting his newly
owned F12 (only 3 weeks only!) from Maranello the home of Ferrari Italy, in style.
You ask how else can you top the experience in collecting the car from the factory.
Mr Billington rode his Italian Bicycle (Colnago of course!) all the way to Italy from
UK to be rewarded a warm welcome by the factory and his newly built car. Now
that’s Bellissimo!!
The F12 delivers unparalleled performance. Its direct-injection, 6,262cc normally-
aspirated V12 engine introduces a new generation of innovations, winning awards,
building passion. It has a staggering 0-60 in 2.9-3.1 seconds, with a top speed of
211.3 mph. Until the LaFerrari came along, the Ferrari F12 was Ferrari’s fastest
road car ever. Quicker than a 599 GTO even quicker than an Enzo.
You ask what else can top this array of spectacular of cars? For most of us old
petrolheads, it would definitely be this 1940’s Ford Truck pickup that turned up
late to the meeting. It was beautifully restored and was originally used to transport
liquor. Can you imagine the good old trucks running around with gallons of crated
whisky or even illegal moonshine. These vehicles were full of character and also full
of stories carried from USA to the UK.
Parkinson’s UK was our chosen charity again this month, there words were ‘The
weather certainly never deters this determined Cars and Coffee Liverpool car
enthusiasts. Well it didn’t with a large selection of convertible cars like Sunbeams,
Tigers, MX5 to all those retro cars and classics. Salt hasn’t hit the roads yet, so let’s
see what next month brings.
