W FEATURE L EFFECTIVE WEIGHT LOSS THAT LASTS BY SCOTT DALY, FORWARD HYPNOSIS Mary Berry once said “Cakes are healthy too, you just eat a small slice”. If like many people, you find yourself thinking ‘Thanks Mary, if only it were that easy’ You may be surprised to find out that with the correct approach it absolutely can be. Everyone knows that the best way to lose weight is to eat well and exercise more, but for a lot of people simply knowing this is not enough when it comes to achieving their physical goals. There are numerous reasons why people develop undisciplined eating habits. Whether it’s overeating, comfort eating, boredom eating or constant snacking all of these behaviours share one thing in common, a feeling of ‘I just can’t help myself ’. Using hypnosis is an incredibly powerful way of not only eliminating bad habits but introducing a sense of control, and it is this sense of control that is the key to lasting change. When people tell me about diets they have tried, the most common things I hear are that they either don’t work at all, or they work in the short term but lead to disappointment when the results don’t last. Almost anyone can summon up the willpower to eat cabbage soup for a week but when dieting turns into a test of willpower, it becomes a battle you fight against yourself, and let’s face it, saying NO to yourself over and over again is far from enjoyable. For a goal to be achievable it should be and can be fun. It shouldn’t feel like you are making huge sacrifices or make you feel guilty when you have ‘sinned’ or been ‘naughty’. When people come to see me for help with weight loss, I tell them to forget the concept of dieting altogether. My approach when using hypnosis is about giving people more choice not less. I want people to be able to eat what they want, when they want to eat it. If you want a biscuit, have a biscuit, but you will be satisfied with one without the rest of the packet calling out to you from the cupboard. The feeling of empowerment people can experience when they take back control of their eating habits in this way is immense. In recent times, there has been a lot of publicity about virtual hypnotic gastric band therapy, and as I am writing about weight loss it would be remiss of me if I did not share my opinion on this subject. Although it can be a useful tool in certain cases, and some people can have success with this approach, I feel like it is offered far too readily and is overused. It seems to have become a ‘one size fits all’, quick fix approach to weight loss. It is something that is done ‘to you’, it takes away an element of responsibility and does little to address the root cause of the undesirable habits, because of this it runs the risk of becoming rather flimsy therapy. The real value of hypnosis lies in its ability to quickly change unwanted habits and our automatic responses to the challenges we face, replacing them with healthier, more empowering patterns of behaviour. This in my opinion is what should be fully explored before we get to the point of emulating surgical procedures. I often wonder if the notion of virtual hypnotic heart surgery would be so readily accepted? If your child or someone you love came up to you one day and said “I’m bored” or “I feel upset” would you turn around and say “Go and have a chocolate bar, or a bag of sweets you’ll feel much better”? chances are you would not. All I want for my clients is that they treat themselves with the same kindness, offering themselves large portions of confidence and second helpings of self-esteem. For me, hypnosis is about accessing your natural ability to make positive lifestyle changes that last. Forward Hypnosis is based in Ness, Cheshire.
