Also made from obaideh and merwah , it is not made every year as specific grape qualities are required to ensure the varieties combine in elegant form . When it is made , however , you get a lovely citrus , smooth and mellow wine – and a wine that makes its appearance two years post vintage .
Finally , in 2007 , the winery also introduced a new range of wines called Musar Jeune . These are unoaked wines and are described by the winery itself as ‘ vibrantly fruity wines ’ and which were introduced to meet the demand for a ‘ current drinking ’ wine . In this range you will find a Musar Jeune White ( a blend of viognier , vermentino and chardonnay ), a Musar Jeune Red ( a blend of cinsault , syrah and cabernet sauvignon ) and a Musar Jeune Rose ( a blend of cinsault and mourvedre ). To cap it all the winery also produces L ’ Arack de Musar ( described as Lebanon ’ s ‘ purest aniseed flavoured spirit ’).
In Lebanon , one of the oldest sites of wine production in the world , we find a true gem . Chateau Musar is a legendary estate , revered and loved in equal measure by those who have had the good fortune to drink their wines . Those of you who love fine wine , will love their wines – and at a price that is modest compared to some of its more illustrious counterparts elsewhere in the fine wine world . The wines are opulent , elegant , with wonderful fruit , complexity , silky tannins and with the capacity to age gracefully .
The whole world , that is the wonderful Chateau Musar , is best described by the words of the great winemaker , Serge Hochar , himself : “ I hate a wine that stripteases for you before you ask it . I want to be seduced slowly . I like a wine that you undress with your senses . I like a wine that is hiding , to be slowly unveiled . Have you heard of The Dance of the Seven Veils ? I like a wine where the more I dig , the more I find ”.
It is worth every penny to dig for the Chateau Musar wines ( particularly the Chateau Musar Red ). Any internet search will reveal where they are on offer – so give them a try , particularly if you have a special occasion on the horizon .
