FIRST SEA LORD AT BIRKENHEAD SCHOOL
First Sea Lord, Admiral Sir Philip Jones,
spoke to a public audience at Birkenhead
School when he recently visited the Wirral.
Sir Philip spoke about the role of the Royal
Navy, the challenges and opportunities it faces
and shared fascinating insights into his role as
the professional head of the United Kingdom’s
Royal Navy.
For Sir Philip, the talk was also an opportunity
to return to his former School, which he
attended during the 1970s and his portrait
hangs in the gallery of notable School alumni.
During the evening prizes were awarded to
the winners of the recent national Royal Navy
Engineering Competition with two of the three
winning teams, Harrie and Richie Jacob from
Year 10 and sixth form students, Christopher
Rowlands, Adam Durband and Toby Meisner,
coming from Birkenhead School. Members of
Birkenhead Sea Cadets and 4th Heswall Sea
Scouts also took the opportunity to meet the
First Sea Lord.
The event was organised in conjunction with
Wirral Hospice and Stephen Burrows, Trustee
and Deputy Lieutenant of Merseyside, and
is the latest event in the School’s Inspiring
Talks Series. Recent guests have also included
health and fitness guru, Joe Wicks, author and
broadcaster, Kate Humble, and former MP,
Jeffrey Archer.
