SILK RD by Nicky Rigby-Smith & Si Hall
Situated on Telegraph Road, Silk Rd is the latest contemporary addition to the restaurant scene in Heswall.
It offers a mouth-watering selection of dishes from the Pacific to the Mediterranean. The menu combines fresh, simple ingredients with a genuine love for creating exquisite cuisine.
Seated by the window, it was a gloomy day outside but the bright, colourful and warm décor of the restaurant, soon warmed us up.
As there was a small group of us having lunch, we decided to dine‘ meze style’ and ordered a selection of dishes from the menu. Whilst perusing the wine menu, we ordered some nibbles: Thai Prawn Crackers and the Silk Road Platter. The platter consisted of pitta bread with hummus, tzatziki, olive tapenade and an Asian avocado dip. A great start to our experience!
So our food journey along the Silk Road begins:
Buttered Black Prawn- A king prawn stir-fry cooked south Indian style. A stunning dish with authentic flavours. We paired the dish with a bottle of Pulpo – made with Albarino grapes. The wine was bright, pale lemon in colour with hints of apple green; fresh and fruity on the palate- perfect with seafood.
Malaysian Steak- Sliced fillet laid on a bed of a rocket and topped with a hoisin, teriyaki and soy sauce. A rich, flavoursome dish, the steak was marinated and seared perfectly.
Pad Thai- Stir fried noodles with egg, spring onions and bean sprouts – this was a generous portion and with a little kick of chilli. Lots of broccoli, cauliflower and carrot, very clean, healthy and tasty.
Moroccan Salad- Dried apricots, goats cheese, pomegranate and almonds mixed with small grain couscous and topped with a honey mustard dressing. Clever flavours and textures, the pomegranate works really well with the cheese.
Chicken Satay- Lovely and moist marinated chicken skewers served with a light peanut sauce.
Laos Money Bags- Minced pork, laos vegetables and spices wrapped in filo pastry, lightly fried, served with sweet chilli sauce. Full of flavour – you’ ve got to give these a go!
Sweet and Sour Chicken- Chicken, mixed peppers, spring onions and pineapple with their very own Mr Chan sweet and sour sauce served with fragrant rice. Another substantial portion, very nicely done, not too sweet.
Persian Lamb- Grilled lamb lollipops coated with rosemary, garlic, sea salt and black peppercorn served with couscous and mint yoghurt. Some of the tastiest lamb we’ ve had in years. We paired this dish with a bottle of Montepulciano D’ Abruzza- an hearty Italian wine, spicy and plummy.
Yaour Tlou – savoury beef kebabs, topped with a greek yoghurt and a spicy tomato sauce, dusted with smoked paprika. Lovely.
Chinese Pork- crispy pork belly topped with a spicy chilli oil and served with an Asian coleslaw. Comes served on potato slices – a hearty dish, very nice.
Croquettes- Iberican ham croquettes served with smoked paprika mayonnaise. Again a generous portion, seriously tasty.
The Silk Road restaurants in Heswall and Liverpool are a great concept that brings to life an array of different and delicious dishes in a fun, lively atmosphere. High quality food, cooked and presented beautifully.
With such a variety of interesting recipes appealing to literally everyone’ s tastes, we can see why this place is Trip Advisor’ s No. 1 on the Wirral. Highly recommended.
